How to Install Heatshield Armor®

This step-by-step installation video shows how to properly install Heatshield Armor® on exhaust pipes, mufflers, catalytic converters, headers, and other high-temperature exhaust components. It covers the tools needed for installation, how to measure and fit the material, securing Heatshield Armor in place, and helpful tips for getting the best results from your installation.

Choosing 1/4″ vs. 1/2″ Heatshield Armor

Heatshield Armor® is available in 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch thicknesses to suit different heat-control needs. The 1/4-inch version is well suited for most general exhaust applications and areas where clearance is limited. The 1/2-inch version provides additional insulation for higher-heat applications or when greater heat containment is needed.

How Heatshield Armor® Works

The outer armor of Heatshield Armor® features a 4-mil aluminum layer that resists the elements and provides long-lasting durability. Inside, exclusive BioCool insulation is bonded to heavy-duty foil and withstands continuous temperatures up to 1,800°F. This construction makes Heatshield Armor ideal for exhaust systems, turbo manifolds, downpipes, and diesel particulate filters. Installed directly on the heat source, Heatshield Armor helps contain heat before it can radiate into surrounding components.

FAQ

Do I need tin snips to cut this exhaust heat shield material?

No, tin snips are not necessary. Heavy duty scissors or a fresh blade in a utility knife with a straight edge works great for cutting Heatshield Armor.

I am trying to determine the number of stainless-steel locking ties to hold the insulation in place. How many do I need to secure this heat shield insulation to my exhaust pipe?

For straight lengths of exhaust pipe, one tie per every 5-6 inches should be enough. For tighter bends like a 90 degree, one locking tie per every 3 inches on the outside of the bend works. Be sure you are using the wide ties as they grip the heat shield insulation better.

Can I use the Armor Weld Tape hold the Heatshield Armor in place?

NO, do not use the tape to hold the Heatshield Armor in place. You can use the wide stainless-steel locking ties we offer, or you may use a hose clamp, safety wire, or other mechanical fastener to hold in its place. Any adhesive backed product should not come in contact with the exhaust system.
