Protecting what feeds and controls your engine and its accessories from heat damage is crucial for reliability and optimal function.Heat shields and thermal barriers are simple and effective ways to protect fuel lines, wiring, brake lines and other components from the negative effects of high temperatures.

For example, when fuel lines are exposed to excessive ambient heat, the risk of vapor lock skyrockets for both carb and fuel-injection engines. Once vapor lock happens, the only thing you can do is sit still and let things cool off. And when electrical wiring is exposed to high ambient heat, electrical resistance through the wires increases, which means it takes more energy to send a signal and electrical energy through, potentially resulting in malfunctions and electrical issues, especially if that heat eventually melts the wires and severs them. A wiring meltdown could also mean a short circuits and damage to the electronic control module and other expensive hardware. With hydraulic lines, such as brakes and power steering, the fluid inside could potentially heat to its “boiling point,” severely hampering performance, if not ceasing functionality altogether. In addition, the rubber sections of the power-steering lines could be damaged by the ambient heat, and eventually fail.

There are several thermal-barrier sleeving options from Heatshield Products to protect these components from heat-related issues:

Lava Tube

Lava Tube™ is a thermal-barrier sleeve with a high-temp hook-and-loop fastener system for easy installation, even if the line or wiring bundle has several bends. The Lava Tube™ material is Heatshield Products’ specially formulated fibrous thermal-barrier weave made from volcanic rock. The basalt fiber allows Lava Tube™ to protect components from continuous temperatures of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, and intermittent temperatures of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it a superior alternative to silicone-based thermal sleeves.

It’s available in the following sizes and lengths:

Hot Rod Sleeving™

Black Heat Wrap for Fuel Lines

Protecting wiring from ambient heat will help to reduce the risk of electrical fires and gremlins and also ensure the wiring performs at optimal efficiency. But wrapping the wiring in electrical tape or cheap, nasty-looking plastic loom material does very little to protect the wiring from heat, nor does it look very attractive. However, Hot Rod Sleeving™ from Heatshield Products is a great material for covering and protecting wiring looms, because it’s capable of withstanding 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit continuous heat, and has a special non-flammable weave that expands and contracts around wire bundles and plugs/terminals while also looking like old-school or OE sleeve material. Various lengths of rolls and internal diameters are available.

Thermaflect Sleeve

Thermaflect Sleeve™ is the perfect material for shielding air-intake tubes from high ambient heat so the air-intake temperatures won’t increase and cause your engine’s computer to reduce timing and in turn reduce the power output. Thermaflect Sleeve™ deflects up to 90 percent of ambient heat from the air-intake tube or other lines and wire bundles (requires minimum of 1-inch airspace and good airflow). It can also be used for deflecting heat away from fuel lines to prevent vapor lock. Thermaflect Sleeve™ can withstand 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit continuous radiant heat and 500 degrees Fahrenheit direct heat. It’s available in multiple lengths and large internal diameters, plus has a hook-and-loop fastener system for easy installation and removal when necessary.
