Heatshield Products Lava Turbo Shield thermal imaging test

We’ve talked before about the benefits of installing a Heatshield Products turbo shield on your car’s turbocharger. Specifically, how when there’s more heat in the turbo spool time and turbo lag decrease, higher exhaust gas velocities increase boost faster and underhood temperatures will be lower.

Our friends at DBR High Performance in Spring Hill, Tennessee, took these thermal images of what was going on underhood at the races as they ran our Lava™ Turbo Shield and Lava™ Tube thermal-barrier sleeving. They’ve been working with us to gather data and material to further demonstrate how well Lava Turbo Shield performs in the real world.

ABOVE: Here's how things looked underhood in normal imaging. DBR installed Heatshield Products Lava Tube thermal-barrier sleeve material on the coolant lines that were close to the exhaust side of the turbo and the exhaust manifolds.

ABOVE: This thermal image shows the Lava Turbo Shield in place and illustrates how much the special insulation reduces the thermal signature on the exhaust side of the turbocharger. Constant exposure to high heat accelerates wear on components (including the coolant, fluid and A/C lines), negatively affects their function and increases the possibility of premature failure.

ABOVE: This image shows the extra heat Lava Turbo Shield is keeping on the exhaust side of the turbo. You can compare how the housing looked in the first thermal image to this one. When it’s this much hotter, it’s difficult to see the details in the image. Stay tuned as we get numbers back from DBR and look at the hard data.
