Best Ways to Cut Lava Tube Material for Proper Fitment

In our latest how-to blog, we’re going to show you some helpful tips for cutting and finishing LavaTM Tube thermal barrier sleeve material so you can have a clean, professional looking install.

LavaTM Tube is one of the most effective ways you can protect fluid lines and wiring harnesses from damaging heat exposure. Made from our specially-formulated volcanic rock-based fiber material, LavaTM Tube can handled up 1200 degrees F of constant heat and intermittent maximum temperature of 2000 degrees F. The volcanic rock-based fibers also give LavaTM Tube a resistance to chemical damage and exposure. Built-in high-temp hook & loop fastening is built into the material, making installation easy but also allowing for removal if necessary to perform maintenance or upgrades.

The material comes in 3-foot and 10-foot long rolls and can be cut to length for proper fitment. But if it’s not cut and finished properly, the cut ends can start to fray and come apart, which reduces the material’s effectiveness to block heat, and progress to the point the material won’t stay installed. Here are some pointers on how to cut LavaTM Tube to fit properly and prevent fraying of the cut ends so the material stays intact and at full effectiveness. Cutting a piece of Lava Tube thermal barrier sleeve material to length

ABOVE: To cut Lava Tube all you need is a good pair of heavy scissors so you can get a good, clean cut. This will help reduce the chance of the cut ends fraying before the ends are treated. It also makes it easier to get a straight cut.

The cut end of Lava Tube that hasn't been treated and is fraying

ABOVE: The cut end of Lava Tube can easily and quickly start to fray and come apart, as seen in this photo. Two simple treatment methods can be used to prevent this from happening. These also work for when you are cutting Lava Wrap exhaust wrap to fit as well, since it is made from the same material.

Applying super glue to the cut end of Lava Tube to prevent fraying

ABOVE: To prevent fraying of the cut end, one method is to use super glue on the end of the material. This will seal the fibers together and prevent fraying. Just try not to accidentally attach the glued end to your eyebrows while it’s drying.

Spraying high-temp clear engine enamel on the cut end of Lava Tube to prevent fraying

ABOVE: The other method you can use is gloss clear high-temperature engine paint. Just give the end a spray with the paint and allow to dry before installation.
