How to Trim Heatshield Armor for Installation

While being stuck at home, practicing social distancing and getting ready for when things collapse into Mad Max-style chaos, it’s the perfect time to buy and install Heatshield Armor™ exhaust insulation from Heatshield Products. One of the key steps in installing Heatshield Armor is properly cutting and finishing the edges of this extremely effective heat shield insulation.

Heatshield Armor is comprised of a durable 4-mil aluminum layer bonded to a specially formulated BioCool™ insulation material that cuts radiated heat by up to 70 percent. This increases exhaust system efficiency, protects nearby components from heat exposure and helps reduce interior temps by decreasing the heat that would otherwise radiate to the vehicle’s floor and passenger compartment.

In order to create the best barrier to heat transfer at the edges, and because it is made from two layers, we recommend folding the foil material over the exposed ends of the BioCool insulation. This also protects the product from absorbing excess water when the vehicle is driven in the rain. The insulation can handle getting wet and will eventually dry, but decreasing water exposure through this edge-cutting technique, you’ll extend the longevity and effectiveness of the product. This is also allows you to place two pieces of Heatshield Armor adjacent to each other and minimize heat loss at the seam. Follow along and we’ll show you exactly how to trim Heatshield Armor.

Razor knife for trimming Heatshield Armor

ABOVE: It is best to use a razor knife with a fresh blade to make clean cuts through Heatshield Armor™. Use as a straight edge for a guide to make your cuts straight through the BioCool™ layer of this extremely advanced heat shield insulation.

Trimming Heatshield Armor with a razor knife and straight edge

ABOVE: Using a straight edge, make light cuts through the BioCool insulation. You’ll want to trim off between a ¼ and ½ inch of insulation. This will give you enough of the exposed aluminum layer to properly fold it over the edge of the BioCool material. Don’t cut through the aluminum or it won’t fold right. Instead, make multiple light cuts through the BioCool layer.

Peeling away Heatshield Armor insulation material

ABOVE: Once you’ve cut through enough of the BioCool insulation, start peeling it off the aluminum layer. You don’t have to worry about getting itchy fingers and hands from handling Heatshield Armor, because BioCool is a non-caustic, non-flammable bio-soluble silica thermal.

ABOVE: The last thing you’ll need to do is to fold the aluminum back over the BioCool insulation. If needed, you can clamp it in place using our stainless steel HP Thermal Tie™. Use this process to all of the edges of Heatshield Armor before installing it on your exhaust system.
