Quick Guide to Heat Shield Sleeve Products

Heat shield sleeves can make the difference between a reliable vehicle and one that’s constantly having issues. Anything underhood near the engine and exhaust is subjected to constant, high-temperature ambient heat. In some situations there can be intermittent contact with a high-temperature heat source that can lead to irregular operation of components or even premature failure. Protecting wiring harnesses, fluid lines and critical linkages from heat and/or potential friction damage can stop a good day from turning into a bad one, whether you’re just going for a cruise or at the racetrack.

Heat Shield Sleeves:

  • Protect fluid lines from heat exposure that can heat fluid inside to point of breakdown or loss of function (like fuel vapor lock)
  • Protect wiring harness bundles from heat exposure and damage that can cause reliability issues and/or harness failure
  • Protect linkages/cables, wiring harnesses and fluid lines from potential friction/abrasive damage
  • Cosmetically improve the look of wiring harnesses and fluid lines for a better looking engine bay

Another thing heat shield sleeves can do is help dress up/clean up a nasty looking engine compartment. Old wiring with crumbling, cheap plastic covering can be like a giant wart on the face of that hot girl you pined after in high school till she doused you with pepper spray. Besides looks, that old plastic loom material does almost nothing to protect against heat. And if you’re building a show car you’ll want to cover that nice new wiring harness for a clean underhood look. For racers installing heat shield sleeve helps protect critical harnesses and fluid lines from heat and exposure that lead to losing races and frustration instead of winning races and not chasing mechanical gremlins.

But never fear Heatshield Products is here! Swinging the club of knowledge and thermal barrier enlightenment, we’re going to show you the different heat shield sleeves we have, and suggestions for using them.

Lava Tube and Stealth Sleeve

For protecting wiring harnesses and fluid lines that are complex or difficult to remove for covering, Lava Tube and Stealth Sleeve with built-in high-temperature hook & loop fastening system are the easy and effective solution to protecting things. Both heat shield sleeves use Heatshield Products’ specially formulated volcanic rock-based fibers woven to form a rugged thermal barrier. Lava Tube features a natural carbon fiber mineral look, while Stealth Sleeve features a more subtle matte black finish. Both are rated to handle up to 1200 degrees F continuous heat (up to 2000 degrees F intermittent) and are chemical, oil and acid resistant. Hook & loop fastening means you can install either heat shield sleeve without having to remove the line or wiring bundle you want to protect. In some cases, both can also protect wiring harnesses from rodent damage. Besides protection, both products can go a long way to dressing up a cruddy looking wiring harness to give your engine bay a whole new look.

Utili-Shields

When trying to protect fluid lines and wiring harnesses, junctions can be difficult to properly protect. A sleeve-shaped material doesn’t shape well to T-junctions commonly found on brake lines, fuel systems and wiring harnesses. Instead of leaving enthusiasts and mechanics to the perils of cobbling something together, Heatshield Products came up with its newest heat shield sleeve product…Utili-Sleeves. Made from the same material as Lava Tube and Stealth Sleeve, Utili-Sleeves come in different diameters and solve the problem of easily and properly protection vital junctions in wiring harnesses and fluid lines.

Hot Rod Sleeve

If you’re after more of a factory look in protect your wiring harness and/or fluid lines from damaging heat and exposure, Hot Rod Sleeve is the heat shield sleeve you want to use. It’s specially woven thermal barrier material allows it to expand over lines, fittings and wiring bundles for a secure fit that looks similar to the older style factory harness cover material. But Hot Rod Sleeve can handle up to 1100 degrees F of constant radiated heat, while its non-flammable makeup adds an extra layer of protection. This sleeve is also perfect for protecting clutch and throttle linkages from heat without hindering their mechanical movement and function. Once installed, the ends are sealed using Heatshield Products heat shrink sleeve to prevent heat from getting inside the sleeve and to keep it secure.

Fire Shield Sleeve

For particular environments where you’re worried about abrasion damage on your fuel or brake lines while also wanting to shield them from heat, Fire Shield Sleeve is the solution. The inner braided fiberglass lining stops heat from heating those critical lines so you don’t have to worry about fuel system vapor lock or brake fade from overheated fluid inside the brake lines. The outer silicone layer adds to Fire Shield Sleeve’s thermal protection while also guarding against potential abrasion that could damage the lines and cause potentially dangerous leaks. Once installed just use Heatshield Products heat shrink wrap to close up the ends so heat can’t get inside the sleeve and you’re brake or fuel lines can enjoy real protection.

Thermaflect Sleeve

Heat shield sleeving isn’t just for small diameter stuff. Air intake tubes and intercooler tubes are subject to the same underhood heat the smaller stuff is. And keeping those components as cool as possible has a direct impact on engine performance and output. Thermaflect Sleeve features high-temp hook & loop fastening for easy installation and removal, while being available in internal-diameters up to 5 inches. It’s so efficient that the material can deflect up to 90% of heat radiated towards it while handling up to 1100 degrees F of constant radiated heat.
